By: Kylie Paquin On Wednesday July 9, I had an appointment for my 7 month knee check up. I met with PA Larry McGuigan and I told him about our project. I asked him for his professional opinion about the importance of knee braces after a surgery. "A brace won't 100 % prevent an ACL tear". There hasn't been a brace that is proven to definitely prevent a knee injury. Although Mr. McGuigan said, " a brace can help protect the knee from impact to the side of your knee". ACL tears can occur when the athlete pivots, self-inflicted, or the athlete is hit/pushed. The brace can't ensure an injury won't happen, but can potentially prevent injury from impact. Mr. McGuigan also included that Dr. Curl advises against wearing a brace after the index surgery, or the first surgery. The brace may be needed after a revision surgery instead of the index surgery. They do recommend a brace for an athlete who has had 2 or more revision surgeries since a brace helps the athlete mentally and gives some support to the knee.

We had a meeting with our mentor Ms. Blanck where we introduced her to our project ideas and details. We showed her our website and ironed out our outside of school mentors that could help us with our project. She also offered us some contacts at the Naval Academy who could potential discuss the different aspects of preventive progarms that are offered in the college and highschool levels
We worked on organizing our pitches and our summer goals. Since our project is a three step plan me and my partners wrote a small indiviual pitch we each shared. My part of our prject is researching about different brace models that could contribute to creating a new lightweight brace model that could potential prevent the tearing of an ACL in a female athelete. Through research we have found that the womens body make up sometimes results in them being more likely to tear their ACL. Targeting this problem will be the main focus of our project.
